Trying to resolve conflict by averaging the wants of protagonists is not the right approach because people do not necessarily get what they deserve. A better approach is to identify what rights the protagonists have and insist on a solution that satisfies all these rights. Be careful, though, to identify true rights and define them well. There are many false notions of rights out there.
